Gunnuhver

About 300 years ago there was a woman named Guðrún Önundardóttir, called Gunna. She was not a nice lady and many people thougt she was a witch. After she died she came back as a ghost and killed a man, who she had been arguing with about a dept before she died.

She didn’t stop there and terrorized the community in Reykjanes. She did more and more damage until the people couldn’t take it anymore and two men were sent to seek help from a well-known priest.

The priest was known not to be easily persuaded, so the two men brought a bottle of Brennivín, an Icelandic Schnaps. That quickly convinced the priest to take this job.

The priest laid a trap  for the ghost so that she fell into a hot spring. The steam of the hot spring prevents the ghost to escape. This hot spring is after that called Gunnuhver. That means Gunna’s spring. It is very a powerful spring constantly erupting steam.

The area is highly active. About 15 years ago it needed to be closed for one season due to earth movements. Maybe the Ghost is trying to escape?
