Djúpalónssandur
On the edge of the peninsula Snæfellsnes at the roots of the mighty glacier Snæfellsjökull we went down to the ocean at a place named Djúpalónssandur. As we walked down from the road we went through an amazing landscape of frozen lava.
We came across a big rock with a hole in it. The hole looked exactly as a map of Africa! My home continent! I was totally overwhelmed to find something like this here in Iceland.
The landscape around was amazing. There were steep lava rocks all over. Very dramatic place. My daughter loved to climb up the hills.
Down by the shore the beach is made of black pebbles. Purely black.
On the beach there are some rusty iron parts lying around. These are rests from an English fishing boat, which stranded here in a bad weather in 1948. 14 men lost their lives and only 5 were saved.
There are many magnificent lava rocks around. Many of them are believed to be habituated by elves. The biggest rocks are called Churches of Elves. You shouldn´t climb on them or throw stones at them. You must ask the elves for permission if you want to visit their homes.
Using a Baby Carrier
When going around with a small child, it isn’t always possible to use a baby stroller. Like here in the lava fields of Iceland you have to climb up and down. As you can see on the pictures, I use a Baby Carrier. It keeps your hands free. The child likes to be near mummy and enjoys it. A young child can face you and when it gets older it can face the front and explore. You can also carry the child on your back. I even breastfeed the child while I am walking around. Nobody notices that. I don’t have to to find a quiet place to sit down. If the child falls asleep, the carrier must have a support for the head. Generally it should have a good spine, hip, head, and neck support. It is important to buy a quality Baby Carrier which is comfortable and safe. It has to fit you well so you don’t get tired. It should be easy to put it on and to put the child into it. I bought a Baby Carrier from Babybjorn and I like it very much. Highly recommended.
