Transkei is an area in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. It was defined as a Homeland for the Xhosa People during the Apartheid. People needed a passport to cross the border between Transkei and other parts of South Africa. It was reintegrated into South Africa in 1994. The area is still poor and many villages don’t have electricity. Many men in the region seek work in the big cities and leave their families behind, only able to visit them over the Christmas holidays. Going to Transkei is like going back in time. To enter Transkei we needed to cross the Great Kei River.
This was the ferry that took us and our car over the river.
